Intuitively
we know that earth day must be all about loving our planet earth. Reduce, Reuse
and Recycle is the call of the day.
If you
use Google to search the internet today, you'll find it reminds you with a
video animation, the one above –
the play button is portrayed as the sun. When you press it, it starts an
animation through the four seasons.
It a nutshell, the day is about
supporting life, the life of our planet. It knows no religion, no gender, no
specific group of people. It's just about people around the world rallying in
their own way, alone or in groups to save water, air, land, and energy.
At the
Earth Day website, http://www.earthday.org/, you can find activities, events
and a blog detailing activities around the world.
You
might find your own neighborhood has events going on all week.
- Virginia Historic Garden Week, which takes people on tours of featured homes in the area to see their lovely gardens.
- Not far away in Newport News, we have the Spring Native Plant Sales at the Virginia Living Museum. They feature the kind of native plants that are good choices to attract our butterflies, hummingbirds and tolerate our area weather.
- Of course the day would not be complete without an Earth Day Celebration Walk, which takes place at Waller Mill Park in the Burg, as I call it.
But
somehow, climate change has turned into a major political issue and there in
lies the break from anything to rave about. Sigh.
Well,
at least two things coming out from this to bear our attention: Earth Day is, hands
down, "the largest secular event in the world," and Google brought it
to our attention with creativity.
Two
things at least to rave about.
It's
time to go out and celebrate Earth Day.
For me,
it will be a slow walk through our neighborhood and being thankful that I am
here on this earth today.
What about you? Any particular Earth Day plans?
